Have scientific advances translated into better service in the PT field?

Have personal trainers moved too far from their core role – making people fitter + stronger?

These two questions were recently posed in a national UK fitness trade magazine.

The consensus seemed to be that Trainers are over-complicating exercise.

Their answer: a call to get back to basics – fat loss, fitness and muscle building. I disagree. Here’s why.

Society today demands speed, simplicity and sexy (comfort). This is not the same as dumbing down.

Trainers need to be able to explore the practical application of the scientific studies, but ALSO have the ability to articulate this knowledge in easy to understand layman terms.

It’s only when you have truly mastered your expertise, that you are able to explain it concisely and clearly.

To do this, Trainers need to master key skills in being able to potray scientific findings in their own voice, in a way that is meaningful and entertaining to their target market (success stories, personal experience etc).

So science has served fitness well by exposing the power of “exercise”; the issue is an over reliance on science alone.

It’s not education alone that’s holding people back from a healtheir life! Instead the trade magazines are churning out second-hand scientific reports, producing technically orientated Trainers with little training in people and business skills.

Consequently two years later, 50% have left the profession disallusioned, burnout and quick to rubbish “personal” training (when the reality was they were just glorified gym instructors, not that they knew any better).

This brings me onto marketing, that dirty word amongst hard-core exercise scientists.

It’s simple, unless you make a subject fun + interesting, you are unlikely to grap people’s attention for long enough to inspire change.

This is why fitness professionals who are talented marketers {and can appeal to speed, simplicity and sexy (comfort)} are often more successful than those with far more technical knowledge.

As for fitness experts in niches such as rehab, pregnancy, kids, seniors, …excellent!

This is following the long-tail trend in all modern industries and the fact you can’t be an expert in all areas right across the field of fitness.

Why then turn the clock back and have everyone specialise soley in strength and fitness? Why have 1000′s of “me-too” personal trainers/gym instructors?!

And look at the size of the wellness and weight-loss markets vs fitness.

Just how important is “strength” and “fitness” to the everyday person nowadays?

Let’s be realistic; the message – get strong, get fit – is just not sexy or of value to the masses (reflected by current participation rates).

YET business is all about meeting people’s needs, which right now is for a much more holistic approach to meeting modern-day demands and protecting overall health + energy levels. What the fitness industry really needs is to stop “the back to basics movement” in its track and go the opposite direction.

The public need more specialists right across the spectrum of health, fitness and wellness in order to reach out to and help more people.

Let’s not go the other route and shrink the market, dumbing down the PT profession in the process!!
